About South Lakes Walking Club...
We are based in and around Kendal, Cumbria, UK. We walk in the Lake District, plus other areas within reach such as the Yorkshire Dales, Lancashire, County Durham and occasionally the Scottish Borders. Our club has been in existence for over 80 years.
In the past, we issued 6-monthly programmes of walks. Sunday coach walks were our main activity, supported by Saturday car walks and Monday summer evening walks. No further coach walks are planned due to lack of demand but our minibus trips continue to be popular.
Every year, we hold a members only weekend away. This year's was to Caernarfon on 27 - 30 October 2023.

Every year, we hold a members only weekend away. This year's was to Caernarfon on 27 - 30 October 2023.
- Every second Sunday we had a full day out by coach departing from Kendal. There are three walks to choose from and each leader gave a description of their proposed walk on the coach during the outward journey: a harder walk, a medium walk and an easier walk (often with an even easier alternative). The coach outings have been suspended. It was planned to resume them in September 2022 but there was insufficient demand to pursue this option. Regular minibus outings are being continued. These are on the weekend that a coach trip would previously have be held. Seats must be booked and paid for no later than two days before the trip.
- We also walk on alternate Saturdays between the minibus outings.
- During the Summer months we also have a programme of Monday evening walks.
- Monday All Day walks are arranged during weeks outside the Monday evening programme.
- In the autumn we have a club long weekend away.
Sunday walks (previous arrangements)
Saturday walks
Monday evening short walks ( approx 4 miles)
LEADERS
Social events include a club Birthday Meal in February, a Summer Meal in August, a long Club Weekend away in the autumn and a Christmas Meal in December.
Our old website www.slwc.org.uk closed on 07/12/12.
- Booking on the coach is essential. Please phone the Coach secretary during the week preceding the coach you wish to go on. Phone 07507610746 between 6 pm and 9 pm. Do NOT leave a voicemail, since that does not guarantee a seat on the coach.
- Once the booking is confirmed, you will need to arrange with the coach secretary whether you would like to get on the coach at Kendal College or Kendal Bus Station.
- The coach fare is £12 and is collected on the return journey.
- If, having booked, you wish to cancel, please do so as soon as possible. Full fare is payable if a cancellation is made for whatever reason after the Wednesday before the walk.
- Once you are on the coach, you can book for the next coach to guarantee your place should you wish to do so. If you do not wish to sign up for the next coach, then you will need to ring Brian during the fortnight prior to the next coach you wish to join.
- With regard to the departure time of the coach back to Kendal, we would like to emphasise that the departure time mentioned on the coach is a projected time only, and should not be viewed as fixed. As a rule the coach will leave half an hour after the last group arrives.
Saturday walks
- The approximate mileage and ascent is shown on the programme.
- The start point of the walk with grid ref and time is shown on the programme.
Monday evening short walks ( approx 4 miles)
- The programme runs from May to August: see details on our WALKS PROGRAMME page.
LEADERS
- Where practical and relevant the leader should inform members of the type of terrain, hazards and obstacles such as precipitous paths, bogs. boardwalks, stepping stones, steepness of ascents and descents, any difficult stiles and streams.
- Leaders have discretion to refuse to take any person who is considered unsuited to participate in the proposed walk or who they consider is inadequately equipped for the prevailing conditions.
- Dogs (except assistance dogs) are not allowed on any walks. It would be helpful if the dog's owner consults the leader of his/her intended walk in advance to check that the distance and terrain are suitable for him/her and the dog.
- Leaders shall not be liable to members or any other persons going on walks for any personal injury, damage, loss or inconvenience of any kind caused to members or other walkers or their property.
- All walk leaders, except leaders on the evening walks, are required to ensure that the survival shelter is carried. There are NO exceptions. This does not mean that the walk leader has to carry it: other members of the party can help.
- Please do not get ahead of the Leader, and please do not leave the walk without letting the Leader know.
- You must be accompanied by at least one other person if you do leave a walk for any reason.
- You are advised to take ice grips such as mini-crampons, spikes or Yaktrax on winter walks.
- With regards to walking poles, can we remind everyone to carry them forward and downward; if you carry them in your rucksack, stow them with the points downward, and lastly, don't throw them over stiles without checking where people are! There have been too many near misses and not carrying them correctly can cause serious injuries.
